Western Horseman Article on Bill Myers

, managed by Bill and Deb Myers and their boys Chad, Billy, Brandon and Brady, is situated in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

We started our horse business breaking colts and race prospects in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. From there, we went to the racetrack for 8 years, training mainly Quarter Horses but also some top quality Thoroughbreds. While at the track, we feel we learned a lot about the importance of good conformation, big hearts and good bloodlines.

While at the Rapid City, South Dakota race facility, we fell in love with the country and the climate. We decided to relocate our operation to the Black Hills – south of Rapid City. When the ‘family’ started to arrive, we left the racing circuit and continued to break colts, putting handles on arena horses, training rope and barrel horses and even did come cutting and snaffle bit competition. In the early 1990’s, we moved our operation to our current location in the northern part of the Black Hills in St. Onge, South Dakota (40 miles northwest of Rapid City).

Throughout our career in the many different areas of the horse industry, we have always owned horses with the maternal bloodlines of our current stallion – Frenchmans Guy. No matter what was asked of them, whether it be racing at the tracks or competing in the cutting, snaffle-bit, roping, barrel racing...they were excelling in all these areas.

Having trained and ridden so many different bloodlines, we noticed that the Laughing Boy (own son of Lightning Bar) bloodlines were showing up in a lot of the great runners and arena champions. Also, we could see that the Laughing Boy broodmares were great producers of offspring that could compete in all areas.

  OUR FAMILY
Bill, Deb, Chad, Billy, Brandon & Brady Myers

We understand the importance of horses that have good minds, plenty of speed and cow. We have built up a band of mares that we feel will compliment our stallions as well as build our horse program - mares with good bone, straight legs, good minds and lots of substance. Our mares have both run and cow in them and we don’t look for any particular bloodlines but at each mare as an individual.

We believe that we should never be content but always strive to raise a better product by breeding the best to the best for a superior individual.

BILLY MYERS – Reproduction Facility Manager
Billy has taken over the management of our Reproduction Facility.  Along with the responsibility of getting all the Myers Ranch mares in foal, he also handles all the shipments being sent out to our outside clients who have booked their mares to one of our Ranch Stallions.

BRANDON MYERS – Trainer

Brandon has taken on the day to day tasks here at Myers Performance Horses as well as halter breaking the foals, starting our 2-Year-Old Performance Prospects, helping with the stallions in the breeding shed and trimming and shoeing the horses here on the ranch.
